Objectives : This study investigated the general public¡¯s perception of mental health problems and factors related to help-seeking attitudes.
Methods : A survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted with the general public (n=1,501) from September 2 to October 14, 2021. The survey comprised questionnaires regarding perception of mental health problems and attitude towards help-seeking for mental health problems. Frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed.
Results : Of the participants, 61.1% responded that mental health is very important in their lives; however, only 10.8% responded that they would be willing to use medical services if they had mental health problems. Factors associated with help-seeking attitude for mental health problem were being female, residing in a rural area, education level higher than undergraduate and acknowledging the importance of mental health and taking care of one¡¯s mental health.
Conclusion : The general public perceived mental health as important; however, the willingness to use medial services for mental health problems was low. Since the perception of mental health problems has a significant effect on professional helpseeking attitudes, it is necessary to improve the general public's attitude toward mental health.
